Pirola: “Title with Olympiakos and the U21 of Italy”

by

Long interview on his website Gianluca Di Marzio gave the Lorenzo Pirolawith his defender Olympiakou to talk about a variety of topics.

The Italian stopper mentioned, among other things, his transfer to the “red and whites” and his goals with them, as well as his course in Inter but also her national U21.

What he said in detail:

“Here you feel the pressure of a big team. The environment is demanding, you have to win every match. The size of this club is evident from the first moment. Karaiskakis is a very hot stadium. You feel the pressure and the importance of every game, especially in Europe, where one goal can make the difference.

When I was in the pre-season with Salernitana, I knew that the club, after relegation, would change a lot and because I was one of the most in-demand players, I knew 99% that I would leave. The transfer to Olympiacos happened very quickly. After the first contact, in less than a week I was already in Athens to sign. I was immediately convinced by the project. A historic club, the chance to play in Europe and claim trophies.

It didn’t affect me much to leave Italy. I definitely miss my family and friends, but I’m lucky to have my wife here with me. Athens is a beautiful city, similar to Italy in many ways. We live near the sea and are happy here.

At Inter, I had integrated into the first team under his guidance Antonio Conteto whom I will always be grateful. The coach had high demands even from us younger ones. The level was very high. I always tried to get the best out of players like Skriniar, De Fray and Bastoni, Maybe because I was the youngest in the team, everyone was very available and willing to help me improve. They were months that benefited me a lot.

When I was playing in Inter’s academies, o Sebastiano Esposito he was undefeated, he must have scored 100 goals in three years. I am very happy that he is doing so well at Empoli now. I also remember the derbies against Lorenzo Colombo, which were always strong games because he is an excellent striker. At Monza I had two excellent teammates, Colpani and Di Gregorio. Another talented player and very good friend of mine is Eduardo Bove.

We talk often, I know he’s fine, and that’s the most important thing. I want to send him my best wishes and a big hug. The player that impressed me the most was Lukaku. I had him both as a teammate and as an opponent, but seeing him every day in training was impressive.

I want to win my first trophy this year and to continue my development here at Olympiakos. We have several competitions that we are competing for. In June, the Euro U21 will be held, and my dream is to finish my career with the Youth national team by lifting the trophy. To have the honor and responsibility of the leader is a special feeling. I have gone through all the age categories of the national team, from K15. Winning the Euro U21 as captain would be like coming full circle.”
