One of the most memorable matches of our national team, in crazy course until winning Euro 2004, he is also against Russia. Last in the group stage. Despite the defeat (2-1), the “blue and white” qualified for the quarter-finals and the rest is… history! Golden scorer, of course, for the “blue and white” was Zisis Bryzas.
A news, then, that comes now from Russia and reminds us of this historical game is that the Alexei Bugaevwho had played then, he fell dead on the Russian-Ukrainian front!
As it became known, 43 years old he is no longer alive, however the circumstances under which he died are not yet known.
His case is quite interesting, as he was arrested last year for involvement in a drug ring and was sentenced to 9.5 years in prison. Therefore, he made the decision to go to the front after signed a contract with the Russian Ministry of Defense, hoping to receive a pardon and stay free from the sentence imposed on him.
Bugaev played his entire career in Russia and retired in 2009, aged just 28, with Krasnodar being his final club. The Russian defender was seven times internationalincluding two matches at Euro 2004 against Portugal and of course Greece.
