Apologies from him Novak Djokovic asked the journalist who made disparaging comments about the 37-year-old tennis player and Serbian fans, prompting ‘Nole’ to refuse to speak after qualifying for the Australian Open quarterfinals.
Channel 9 reporter, Tony Joneshe commented live on the Serbian fans who were behind him and chanted Djokovic’s name as “bad guys”, mocking them saying that the tennis legend is “overrated” and that he should be “kicked out”.
This caused Nole’s reaction. “The famous sports journalist who works for the official broadcaster here in Australia, Channel 9, made fun of the Serbian fans and made insulting comments about me. Since then, he has chosen not to formally apologize. As is Channel 9. Since they are official broadcasters I have chosen not to give interviews to Channel 9. I have nothing to do with Jimmy Courier or the Australian public“, Djokovic had stated.
The apology, albeit belatedly, came from Tony Jones. “I want to apologize to Novak. We have developed a nice relationship with the Serbian fans… and there was humor, and I thought what I did was an extension of that humor. Clearly it was not interpreted that way. I feel that I let the Serbian fans down“, he pointed out.
