EPO’s condolences for Takis Economopoulos: “One of the biggest goalkeepers in history”

Takis Economopoulos “passed away” at the age of 81, sowing sadness both in the Panathinaikos family and in the whole Greek football.

In its announcement EPO bid farewell to the “bird” highlighting the great career, but also his contribution to the sport.



In detail the announcement of the EPO:

“President Makis Gagatsis and members of the Executive Committee of the Hellenic Football Federation express their sincere condolences for the loss of Takis Economopoulos who passed away at 82 years.

The deceased was one of the biggest goalkeepers in Greek football history and competed 25 times in the national team, from 1965 to 1974.

Economopoulos defended Panathinaikos’ home since 1963 and for 13 years and ended his great career in 1979 as a football player of Apollo Athens. With the “Greens” he won a total of 7 titles, 5 championships and 2 Greek Cups and was the Greek team’s main goalkeeper in the Historical Champions League final with Ajax in Wembley in 1971.

In the years he fought he acquired the nickname “bird”, thanks to his impressive Reflexes.

Greek football bids him on with great emotion. ”
