Court upholds punishment and Russia is out of World Cup play-off

by

Russia will remain excluded from the European play-off for the 2022 Qatar World Cup after the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) rejected the Russian Football Federation’s appeal to lift FIFA’s sanctions.

The decision, similar to the one taken on Tuesday (15) regarding the UEFA sanctions, does not anticipate the future decision of the sports justice on the merits of the case, which will only be examined after several weeks.

“The arbitration process continues. A panel of judges is being formed and the parties have shared their written observations. But no hearing has been scheduled,” explained the Lausanne, Switzerland-based body.

The defeat of the Russian Football Federation’s appeal prevents the country’s selection from getting a place in the World Cup, which will be played from November 21 to December 18, in Qatar.

Host of the 2018 World Cup, where their team reached the quarter-finals, Russia would have to face Poland on March 24, in Moscow, in the semi-finals of their play-off group.

But FIFA eliminated the Russians, qualifying Poland directly for the final on March 29, in which they will face the winner of Sweden and the Czech Republic.

CAS spares FIFA a huge headache with the decision, as Poland, Sweden and the Czech Republic announced that they would not face Russia after the invasion of Ukraine, which began on 24 February.
