by

Darlan Romani, 30, is the indoor shot put world champion. The Santa Catarina native registered the best mark of his career, on Saturday (19), in Belgrade, and won the gold medal in the modality of the Indoor World Athletics Championships.

Pitch after pitch, he was breaking the South American indoor record. He recorded 21.74 m on the first attempt, 21.79 m on the second and secured gold on the third with 22.53 m. In the following three, he still obtained a 22.18 m.

With 22.53 m, Romani left behind the North American Ryan Crouser, current two-time Olympic champion, who reached 22.44 m. New Zealander Tomas Walsh completed the podium in Serbia, with 22.31 m.

It was Brazil’s 16th medal in indoor editions of the World Athletics Championships, five gold medals. Darlan joined Zequinha Barbosa (800 m, Indianapolis-1987), Fabiana Murer (pole vault, Doha-2010) and Mauro Vinícius da Silva (long jump, Istanbul-2012 and Sopot-2014) in the list of Brazilian champions.

The Santa Catarina native won many fans with his participation in the Tokyo Olympics last year. At the time, he was in fourth place. The podium was almost, but he won applause for his charisma, for spontaneous interviews and for overcoming bad training conditions.

As he did not win a medal, Romani did not receive an award from the COB (Brazilian Olympic Committee). A group of fans, however, organized a virtual crowdfunding that raised R$ 302,275 for the athlete. Much more than the BRL 36,000 allocated by the COB to each Olympic champion.
