Fluminense wins from a comeback and breaks the streak of Palmeiras at the Brazilian Nationals

by

Fluminense stopped the positive sequence of Palmeiras. With many passing errors and difficulties in getting the ball out in the second half, the team from São Paulo was defeated by 2-1, on Sunday (14), at Maracanã. This happened thanks to defensive midfielder Yago Felipe, author of the two goals.

Alviverde arrived in Rio de Janeiro with a series of positive results against Ceará, Sport, Grêmio, Santos and Atlético-GO. The setback made Palmeiras fall to third place in the Brazilian Championship table, with 58 points, ten behind the leader Atlético-MG and with one game more.

Fluminense climbed to 8th place, with 45 points, and is four of the classification zone for Libertadores.

Fluminense seemed to be living a prolonged hangover from the victory against Flamengo, on October 23rd. Since then, the team has racked up bad performances and defeats. Before this Sunday’s match, they had only one positive result in four rounds. It won Sport, but lost to Santos, Ceará and Grêmio.

Palmeiras was more aware on the field throughout the first half and could have scored with submissions from Raphael Veiga and Rony. That didn’t happen because of Marcos Felipe’s great saves. The goalkeeper just couldn’t save Dudu’s shot at 27. The striker from Palmeira hit a shot from the right angle in a corner rebound and scored a great goal.

The situation changed and caught fire in the second half because of Yago Felipe. He tied the game in 27 seconds in a shot that deflected into Luan’s back and outwitted Weverton. But shortly thereafter, he prevented Fluminense’s turnaround. Referee Caio Max Augusto Vieira had scored a penalty on Lucca. But called by the VAR, he canceled the marking due to the lack of Yago on Zé Rafael at the beginning of the move.

Fluminense grew on the field, especially because they managed to take advantage of the careless departure of Palmeiras after the break. Upon realizing this, the hosts tightened the mark and began to retrieve more balls. Lucca missed a great opportunity to turn the score around.

By forcing the offensive game more and more, the cariocas gave space to the counterattack. Three times, Palmeiras started with 4 players against three rivals, but could not take advantage.

Another attraction apart from the match was the reunion of Gustavo Scarpa with Fluminense’s fans. Formed by the club, he worked in Laranjeiras between 2014 and 2017, but the departure was not friendly. Scarpa even went to court when he asked for his release. Every time he picked up the ball, he was booed and cursed. When Palmeiras scored the goal, the midfielder faced the tricolor crowd.

Scarpa was no longer on the field (he had been replaced) and saw him from the bench when, at 42, Yago Felipe hit Weverton’s right corner to define the victory of the Rio team.

In the next round, Palmeiras will play the derby against São Paulo on Wednesday (17), at Allianz Parque. There will be no Dudu (expelled in the final minutes) and Felipe Melo, suspended for the third yellow card.

On the same day, Fluminense visits Juventude. There will be no Fred, who received a red card after the final whistle.
