A great sports news of the week was that United States and the United Kingdom, with unique candidacies, they must be headquarters of the 2031 and 2035 women’s World Cup, respectively. Confirmation is next year.
There is no doubt that both will be a public success and organization. These are countries that love, respect and invest in women’s football, have virtually ready infrastructure and excellent stadiums. But there is a detail. These are nations that, while deserving, for all they have done in recent years to help develop the sport, are among the least needing to host the World Cup.
I have already spoken in this space how the popularity of women’s football exploded in England since the Wembley stadium was crowded at the 2012 Olympic Games, when the English team faced Brazil. It was clear that it was an excellent deal. Sponsorships, television broadcasts, increased crowd. The Domestic League has professionalized and today is one of the strongest in the world.
