Haas announced that pilot Mick Schumacher is out of the Saudi Arabian GP, which takes place this Sunday (27), after the pilot suffered a serious accident during qualifying, this Saturday (26).
During the second part of training, Schumacher crashed hard into a wall of the track and was taken to the hospital, where he undergoes tests to assess his health. Shortly after the accident, his team announced on social media that he was conscious. Hours later, still on Saturday, announced that he would be out of the race.
Haas said the 23-year-old German, son of Ferrari legend and seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher, appears to be physically fine and has spoken with his mother Corinna.
He was taken by ambulance to the circuit’s medical center after being taken out of his wrecked car and then flown by helicopter to King Fahad Armed Forces hospital.
The FIA, the sport’s governing body, said the assessment at the medical center had found no broken bones. The driver had no visible injuries and tests will assess whether there was any internal damage, according to team boss Guenther Steiner.
The car was traveling around 274 km/h at the time of impact with the concrete barriers at the exit of Turn 10, scattering debris across the asphalt. A red flag was given and training had to be temporarily stopped.
Schumacher, who was ninth fastest on the circuit, apparently lost control of the car on the curb, spinning and crashing sideways into the wall. “Maybe he just tried to go a little too fast,” Steiner said. “Here, if you make a mistake, there’s no escape. It’s walls.”, he completed.
The knock was the second of the session. Williams’ Canadian Nicholas Latifi had already caused red flags in the first phase of practice.
