Twenty -one athletes, who returned from a national event, died yesterday in a car accident in Nigeria in which the bus was involved, authorities said.
According to a statement from the Federal Traffic Police, the accident, which did not involve other vehicles, was probably due to the driver’s “fatigue” or that he had developed “excessive speed” during a night trip.
The victims returned to Kano, in the northern part of the country, from a national sporting event, in the 22nd in a row, which took place some 1,000 kilometers south, in the State of Ogun.
President Bola Tinoumbu said a few days ago that this sporting event, which included a wheelchair basketball as Western African wrestling races, was a reflection of “unity, power and durability that define us as a nation”.
Traffic accidents are often on the Nigerian road network, which is in poor condition and is not sufficiently maintained, with the authorities attributing the most to excessive speed and in violations of the Road Traffic Code.
According to official data, in 2024 9,570 traffic accidents and accidents were recorded that caused 5,421 deaths.
