Applies today, at the premiere of European U-21 Championship in Bratislavaa new regulation approved by the International Council of Football Federation (IFAB) the March 1st 2025.
According to him, If a goalkeeper holds the ball for more than eight seconds, the referee will hire corner to the opposing team. This replaces the previous sentence of an indirect free kick for holding the ball for more than six seconds. The referee will also use a visible five -second countdown to signal the end of the time limit.
These are the guidelines that UEFA has established for the referees to apply the new rule, which comes into force today in all UEFA events:
1. The countdown of eight seconds begins when the goalkeeper has full control of the ball and does not accept pressure from an opponent.
2. The referee will count visible in the last five seconds, ensuring that the goalkeeper can see the countdown.
3. If opponents begin to push or block the goalkeeper during the countdown, the referee will stop the countdown and give an indirect free kick to the goalkeeper.
