Dimitris Pavlidis: Historical Return of Greek Discus to World Championships after 28 years

Greek discus has returned to the big scene of the world track after 28 years, thanks to Dimitris Pavlidis’ excellent appearance in Tokyo.

The 23 -year -old champion shot 62.49 meters, recording the best Greek athlete in the history of the competition at a World Championship.

Alexander Pavlidis’ athlete consistently stood in the qualifying, having three steady attempts above 60 meters: 60.17 m, 62.49 m and 60.78m. His presence sealed a dreamy season, in which he achieved a new individual and Panhellenic record of 65,11 m.

With the 22nd place in the total of the two groups, Pavlidis gained valuable experiences in view of the following European events. He appeared very happy in the mixed zone, stating:

I feel very happy about my appearance. I gave everything, I fought and felt that I belonged to the elite of the discus. The qualification may not come, but I tried it and I achieved my training performance here. From now on, the goal is to shoot stability over 62 meters and continuous improvement

Pavlidis will continue his preparation in Kilkis, training next to his father Alexander Pavlidis and with his athlete, Yiannis Korakidis, with the aim of new successes for Greek discus.
