So what if he’s 34 years old? THE Lefteris Petrounias impressively entered the Jakarta World Gymnastics Championships.
In the first group of qualifiers he collected easily the highest score in the hoops. He scored an 8.666 for his 5.700 difficulty routine and scored a 14.366 overall, which put him in first place. A… small step on his way out cost Petrounias an even better score, but still his presence in the final is a given.
He will just have to wait until Monday after the qualifying round to see if he has a place in the top eight who will renew their appointment for Friday’s final.
Petrounias is participating for the ninth time in a World Championship, since 2009 (!) and has won three gold (2015, 2017, 2018) and one silver (2023) medal.

As regards the other participations, o Stefanos Tsolakidis in doubles she scored 11.166 on a program of difficulty 4.900 (run 6.266) as she had a bad fall on the way out and is provisionally in 11th place on the instrument.
Two Greeks participated in the preliminary of the combined individual, presenting their programs in all six instruments. THE Alcinous the Greek collected 72,132 and o Antonis Tantalidis it collected 72,132. After the completion of the first subdivision, the two Greeks are temporarily in 4th and 5th place respectively behind the Japanese Hashimoto and Shinosuke and the Jamaican Doan. Their final position will be determined after the completion of the qualifying round, at noon on Monday 10/20.
In the final on Wednesday 22/10, the best 24 of the combined individual will qualify, but it is considered impossible for the Greeks to claim the qualification with the scores they collected. At the previous World Championship in Antwerp in 2023, Nikos Iliopoulos took 61st place with a total score of 76.830b, while in 2022 in Liverpool, Apostolos Kanellos took 80th place with 70.732b.
