Triumph for Cardiff in the Welsh “battle”, with stress in the penalty procedure, Fulham

by

The first night of the Carabao Cup Round of 16 saw Cardiff emerge victorious in the Welsh derby against Wrexham.

And it may not be one of the most historic duels, but both teams knew that in addition to qualifying for the quarter-finals, a huge amount of prestige was at stake.

The “bluebirds” took the lead with Saleh from a rebound in the 13th minute. They had the post, the chances, the dominance, equalized by Kiefer Moore’s header in the 52nd minute, but the ‘ticket’ came with an easy finish by Fish in the 71st minute from the second post.

Fulham needed it until they equalized, as they were also stressed in the penalty shootout, which decided their qualification to the “8” of the English League Cup with a 5-4 win over Wycombe.

The ‘cottagers’ saw their opponents take the lead in the 4th minute through Woodrow. King first saved the game in the 48th minute with his first goal to make it 1-1 and from the penalty spot in a suspenseful process with repeated missed chances, Silva’s side prevailed with Issa Diop finishing the affair.

Brentford simply scored, smiled, saw it as a slightly more intense workout, but again things came to them awfully comfortably to prevail with a comprehensive 5-0 win over Grimsby.
