Since recurring the leg of Panagiotis Gionis in the recent matches with his team, the Polish Bogoria for the Champions League, the top table tennis player permanently loses the World Individual Championships, which starts next Tuesday at the next X to be out of action for at least two and a half months.
Gionis will go conservatively during this period, following a strong medication and treatment program, but there is a serious possibility that surgery will be needed to drastically treat the problem.
The Greek delegation for the World Championship is finally composed only by Giannis Sgouropoulos and Katerina Toliou. The mission would be small, anyway, because there is a limit of 128 athletes and an equal number of athletes in the event and the entries come mainly from the international rankings.
Gionis returned from Poland last Monday and was immediately out of training. His leg was swollen, he became inflamed again and it is difficult even for him to walk. He was monitored by a staff of doctors and came to the strong recommendation that the athlete stay out of competitions for a longer period of one month, which he had rested after September 20 and the European Top 16 of Thessaloniki.
After a few weeks, he may start training with a short duration and low pace, but it is definitely not possible to compete again before January 2022.
The 41-year-old defender is undergoing intense medication to get rid of the inflammation and pain. He is also doing treatments, something that had gone very well in October, but with the pressure of the games, the situation worsened. The tendon is not damaged, however a bone in the Achilles tendon shows a degenerative image and with friction it creates the problem. If it does not go away, surgery is the last resort.
Gionis stressed that with the current data, the surgery will need a quarter to recover and he can do it at the end of the season next May.
In the meantime, next week he may start strengthening, in December he timidly does some completely relaxed workouts and always with the instructions of the doctors, he will hope to see a noticeable improvement in case he returns to competitive action in the new year.
After many years, he loses a world championship, as he recently lost the European team for the same injury. If he went to Houston, then he would play in the doubles with Sgouropoulos.
In the end, Greece will not take part in the doubles matches with either the current European U21 champion or Toliou.
