Samuel Pupo and Jadson André guarantee a spot in the elite – Origin Surf

by

The world stage in Margaret River, Australia, resumed with huge waves. After a brief pause waiting for a new wave, the event started last night, 02, from here in Brazil. With high waves, great performances and some questions.

With waves reaching 15 feet at Main Break, one of Margaret’s most iconic breaks, the third phase of the Margaret River Pro began.

The stage closes the first half of the CT and marks the dispute for the last spots in the group of 22 male surfers of the world surfing elite. These are still in this year’s dispute and guarantee their spots for the start of the 2023 stage calendar.

Samuel Pupo and Jadson André confirmed their names yesterday, as they advanced to the round of 16. They join the team alongside the already classified Filipe Toledo, current leader of the ranking, Italo Ferreira, Miguel Pupo and Caio Ibelli.

The event should end at 8 pm this Tuesday (time in Brazil), with live broadcast by SporTV and WorldSurfLeague.com.

What happened to DVD?

The talented and brave Deivid Silva caused a surprise when he surfed his heat yesterday, against the rookie Barron Mamyia. DVD, as it is affectionately called, ended the battery with a measly 0.13 points. As his opponent moved, surfed, dropping five waves in total, the Brazilian remained inert. Despite the challenging sea, it is still difficult to understand what happened to the Brazilian. Perhaps the pressure of the cut took a toll on her shoulders.

How fair is João Chianca away from CT?

It’s naive to talk about fairness when it comes to competitive surfing. There are so many problems and questions that arise from the idea of how fair competition surfing is. Especially on the big circuits like the CT of the WSL.

Surfing can be considered one of the most complex sports of all if we analyze the infinite changes to which surfers are subjected. Even more challenging may be the lives of judges, who need to turn such subjective criteria into numbers.

Now, as if all the pressure of competition wasn’t enough, the difficulty of staying constant and basically winning a stage of the circuit, whether elite or not, athletes have to deal with the cut, which drastically reduces the number of surfers.

Finally, an athlete who has everything to shine in the elite of the world surfing, and more than that, showed to be completely ready, bids goodbye to the CT.

It is regrettable that names like João Chianca, who would renew the airs of the circuit, are left out. But rules are rules.

It’s been a while since I’ve won a battery like this, on a comeback. And it was at the right time! I was trying not to think too much about rankings. But, there were a lot of people in the back wanting to take my spot, so I focused on getting the right waves and surfing well.
