Nepalese climber climbs Everest for 10th time, breaks own record

A 48-year-old Nepalese climber climbed Everest for the 10th time on Thursday (12) and broke her own record, becoming the woman who most climbed the mountain, located in the Himalayas.

The last time Lhakpa Sherpa had climbed the 8,848 meters of Mount Asia was in 2018. The men’s record also belongs to a Nepalese: Kami Rita Sherpa, 52, who has already reached the top of Everest 26 times – the last of them also this week. .

Mingma Gelu Sherpa, Lhakpa’s brother, and a Nepalese tourism official confirmed the climber’s feat.

The daughter of a couple who had 11 children, Lhakpa was born in the eastern district of Sankhuwasabha, home to the fifth highest mountain in the world, Makalu. Nepal has 8 of the 14 highest mountains in the world.

Also on Thursday, seven members of an “all black” expedition made up of black climbers from the United States and Kenya climbed the mountain, said Jeevan Ghimire of Shangrila-Nepal Trek.

To date, fewer than 10 black mountaineers have reached the summit, but this is the first time that all members of an expedition were black, officials say.

This year, Nepal has issued 316 permits to climb Everest in the peak season, which ends this month, compared with 408 last year — the highest on record.

Everest has been climbed 10,657 times since the first time in 1953. Many climbers have reached the summit more than once and 311 people have died.

The most recent death, of Russian climber Pavel Kostrikin, 55, was recorded last Sunday (8), in a camp located at an altitude of about 5,360 meters.

In August 2019, the Nepalese government determined that to climb Everest and other mountains in the country, proof of experience at high altitudes is required.

The move came after the deaths of 11 climbers — nine on the Nepalese side and two on the Tibetan side. At the time, the image of a line of people waiting their turn to reach the summit went around the world.
