A large British cinema network will accept digital IDs as proof of age.

Members of the UK Film Association such as Cineworld, Odeon, Showcase Cinemas and Vue will receive a Yoti digital ID app to verify their age.

This means that young people over the age of 13 can use their smartphones to prove their age, eliminating the need to carry important identity documents such as passports.

For many who want to shoot a certified “15” or “18” movie, it’s hard to prove their age without a passport or driver’s license, and refusing is no fun.

The new solution hopes to reduce the challenges many theaters face when verifying their age, as required by current film rating systems.

“British cinemas have between 165 and 170 million screenings each year, with around 30% among the 15-24 age group (around 20% for the 9-14 age group). Phil Clap, CEO of the British Film Institute said.

These proportions could be even higher when the cinema reopened in May of last year.

Kelly Drew, Cineworld COO, said:

Drew believes that using the Yoti app to verify your identity can also help employees who frequently complain about their customers.

“Young people want to be able to do everything on the phone and it’s natural to use them to prove their age. It benefits both theater and young viewers alike.” Toast, said Robin Thombs, CEO and co-founder of Yoti.

How can I create a digital ID?

  • Download Yoti for free (or the Post Office EasyID app) from the Android Play Store or the Apple App Store
  • We will verify your identity by adding a photo ID and your current photo.
  • Open the Yoti app: tap to see your ID and select your age (no other personal information will be shared)
  • Send your ID to the film crew:

Digital ID cards display a confirmed photo of the person and a hologram that moves when the phone is tilted to prevent counterfeiting.

Cinema staff can also scan the QR code on the card using a free access web application.

Yoti’s reusable digital ID apps have already been adopted by a number of organizations including the NHS, Virgin Atlantic and 30,000 High Street locations in the UK.

Yoti recently partnered with Gen Z’s favorite social media app to introduce age-appropriate facial scanning.
