Apple could unveil its first augmented reality smart glasses or headset when the tech giant holds its annual developer conference this week.
iPhone makers have long been rumored to be working on mixed-reality wearable devices that allow users to see virtual items hidden in front of them in the real world.
The company’s annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) will be held Monday through Friday.
Apple may also use the device to preview the device, along with a new dedicated software platform called RealityOS, according to reports from the US.
California businesses have traditionally used WWDC to introduce new versions of software offered by the most popular devices (iPhone, Apple Watch, iPad, Mac computers).
But this year, there are suggestions that some new MacBook laptops and Apple’s own second-generation computer chip, the M2, may be heralded to improve the performance of a new range of computers.
A look at the new software first can also be used to suggest what Apple’s next-generation hardware will look like. For example, the iPhone 14, which will launch later this year.
Last month, Apple announced a new range of accessibility tools designed to make devices easier for people with disabilities. This area may be further discussed at WWDC, as well as the company’s other recent focus, user privacy.
The meeting will begin Monday at 6pm UK time and will be streamed live on Apple’s website, beginning with a keynote address from Apple CEO Tim Cook.
