The month of June is the period when the biggest companies in the video game industry are dedicated to making game announcements for the coming years. With E3 out of the picture, the mood for the season has cooled. Today, publishers are dedicated to their own independent events, which try to preserve some of that spirit.

Last Thursday (2), it was Sony’s turn with the State of Play. The Japanese company has announced some of the top PlayStation games of the coming months.

The State of Play is part of the Summer Game Fest, an event led by Geoff Keighley that will be held this Thursday (9), at 4 pm. The festival tries to take the place of E3 and will bring together dozens of third-party companies (those that do not produce consoles) this year.

Highlights of the event were the announcement of the long-awaited remake of “Resident Evil 4” and the release of the trailer for “Final Fantasy XVI”, the first game in the franchise’s main series since 2016. Both will arrive on PS5 in 2023.

One surprise was the announcement of the PC version of “Marvel’s Spider-Man”, following Sony’s recent trend of giving up console exclusivity for some games, as it did with “Horizon Zero Dawn” and “God of War”. The Spider-Man game comes to computers on August 12 this year.

The new generation of consoles, represented by the PS5 and Xbox Series S/X, is still not well defined. Because of the lack of electronic components, consoles have had a hard time reaching consumers. So the companies are still insisting on a hybrid release — making the new titles also available for the previous generation, PS4 and Xbox One.

Even so, Sony reveals some of its intentions for the coming years. One of the bets is the PlayStation VR 2, a new version of the virtual reality glasses. The company announced four games on the platform, including an expansion of “Horizon Forbidden West”, which was released in March of this year for PS4 and PS5.

But State of Play also paid attention to some smaller titles. This is the case of “Stray”, in which the player plays a cat to solve mysteries of a futuristic city, and the indies “Season: A Letter to the Future” and “Rollerdrome”. All three will be launched in the second half of this year.

“God of War: Ragnarok”, the long-awaited sequel to the 2018 game, did not receive new details. The title is Sony’s main bet for this year.

In addition to the Summer Game Fest, other companies also set aside a specific day to announce news. Microsoft’s Xbox & Bethesda Showcase event takes place next Sunday (12). Two of the most anticipated games by the company’s studios, “Starfield” and “Redfall”, were delayed to 2023 recently.

Electronic Arts switched the annual EA Play to focus on specific ads. Last week, the studio unveiled the new “Star Wars Jedi: Survivor”, the sequel to “Fallen Order”, released in 2019.

Nintendo has not yet announced a Direct for June – the last one took place in February this year. Ubisoft also did not confirm whether it will hold any such event this month.
