Internet Explorer, Microsoft’s main web browser, will finally be shut down this week, ending its 27-year service.
Internet Explorer first debuted as a built-in browser for Windows 95 in 1995, long after it was superseded by Microsoft’s Edge browser.
The last time the OG browser received the update was in 2013 when Microsoft released Internet Explorer 11.
Microsoft is gradually discontinuing support for Internet Explorer across multiple platforms, but tomorrow (June 15) the desktop app will be shut down entirely.
This affects certain client SKU versions of Windows 10 (version 20H2 and higher) and Windows 10 IoT (version 20H2 and higher) on IE11. Of course, IE is not available in Windows 11 because Microsoft Edge is the default browser.
“Internet Explorer (IE) 11 desktop apps will end support for Windows 10 Semi-Annual Channels starting June 15, 2022,” the Microsoft IE 11 lifecycle page said.
Most users have long since ditched IE for Chrome, Safari, Edge, or Firefox, but some well-intentioned tweets welcome the end of Internet Explorer.
Internet Explorer will finally shut down on June 15, 27 years later.
It seems a bit late, but I clicked “Close” 26 years ago.
