General Motors in collaboration with Lockheed Martin will design the next generation of lunar rovers capable of transporting astronauts longer distances to the Moon’s surface.
Unlike the Apollo mission, when the rovers traveled only four miles from the landing site, Artemis astronauts would go farther and explore more of the Moon than ever before to conduct critical scientific research.
The partnership aims to have the vehicles ready for the first manned missions to the 21st century Moon, which are currently scheduled for 2025.
The vehicles are specially designed with autonomous driving capability and platforms that can handle the transport of people or tools on the surface of the Moon.
GM uses the same driver-in-the-loop simulator it used to develop the GMC Hummer EV
“The things you would do to make a vehicle suitable for an off-road environment are the same things you would do on the Moon, it’s just a change in numbers,” said Jeff Vogt, GM chief engineer for advanced vehicle dynamics. .
