According to the university, Cambridge medical students are the first in the world to study holographic patients.

Students at Addenbrooke Hospital use a new augmented reality training system called HoloScenarios to teach and learn realistic holograms that can be used from anywhere in the world.

This technology was developed by the NHS Foundation Trust (CUH) at Cambridge University Hospital, the University of Cambridge and Los Angeles-based technology company GigXR.

The developers say they can provide more flexible and cost-effective training than traditional simulations, which require more resources and costs to maintain the lab and hire patient actors.

According to the developers, wearing augmented reality headsets not only allows students to see each other, but also to interact with multifaceted, medically accurate holographic patients.

Students will experience various modules using technology. The first module focuses on respiratory status and emergencies.

It applies to holographic patients with asthma and subsequent anaphylaxis, pulmonary embolism and pneumonia.

Other modules are under development in cardiology and neurology.

Dr. Arun Gupta, a consultant anesthesiologist at CUH who is leading the project, said:

“As educational institutions praise the acquisition, the demand for platforms that offer ease of use and simplicity of learning management for blended learning is growing rapidly.

‘GigXR has enabled instructors to better prepare students for accurate medical simulations for observation and evaluation.

“By using HoloScenarios, we help educate students from mentor-based models to models that give students around the world equal access to invention-based and competency-based clinical skills.”
