Autonomous driving has many advantages, but it does not always go smoothly.
In San Francisco these days, a fleet of drone taxis was parked at an intersection and appeared to be blocked for hours.
Ultimately, the car driven by Cruise (owned by General Motors) had to be physically removed by an engineer called to the scene.
Humans may feel like they are witnessing the beginning of a robotic revolution, but the problem is probably more common. There was a software error.
Details are still pretty scant, but the image from the scene shows about eight driverless cars stuck at the intersection of Goff and Fulton streets. It is about 2 miles from Fisherman’s Wharf in San Francisco.
Some @cruise Robotax seems to have gotten stuck in science fiction at the corner of Gough St. and Fulton St. last night.
Human manipulation obviously had to save them. There are still some twists to solve. pic.twitter.com/eXDocjVfHU

Posting a photo of the event on Reddit, viewer Shaun Sinha commented: It was quite a surreal event. People had to bring their cars by hand. “
Autonomous cruises only operate from 10 pm to 6 am in the city. By the way, they are completely autonomous. There is no human driver to back up, so I am alone in the back seat.
Drew Pusateri, a Cruise spokesperson, told Digital Trends about the incident:
“This has been resolved and did not harm passengers, but we apologize for any inconvenience.”

This isn’t the first time Cruze’s self-driving cars have been talked about.
In April, one of the company’s vehicles suddenly took off after being attacked by a police vehicle.
According to Cruz, the car performed as expected. The company said in a tweet that the car was not fleeing from police, but was instead “going to the nearest safe place and trying to stop traffic.”
Cruz said he is working closely with the San Francisco Police Department on how to communicate with the vehicle in these situations.
