Unexpected changes darken people’s Instagram feeds (credit: Getty)

Instagram users opened the app this week and found that things had changed a bit until they were gone.

The app suddenly updated and the normal white background of the channel turned black.

According to Instagram, the move is aimed at making the app more immersive, but not everyone is convinced.

Some say the new dark theme makes subtitles harder to read.

Other changes include increasing the size of the post and moving it to a 9:16 aspect ratio.

Its goal is to make the app more video-friendly, and it was first published by CEO Adam Mosseri in May.

“We’re bringing Instagram to where video is the largest part of the home experience, where content is more immersive, where it takes up more of the screen, and where most sources are recommendations. I haven’t heard of that yet.”

“The future of video and the future of photography is mobile, 9:16 and awesome. That’s why we’re testing tall photos and tall videos in our feeds.”

How can I have it back?

If you’re not a fan of the new Instagram layouts, you might be wondering how you can go back to a white background.

Android users can find the settings in the settings menu of the app. Just tap on your profile picture at the bottom of the screen, then tap on the three horizontal bars at the top.
