by

Most voters who intend to vote for Jair Bolsonaro (PL) in the October election believe that the president fights rather than encourages crimes in the Amazon and that he did what he could to investigate the deaths of journalist Dom Phillips and the indigenist. Bruno Pereira in the region.

According to the latest Datafolha poll, almost all of its supporters believe in God. A third of them go to churches or services more than once a week, and almost half say they always contribute financially to their religious institution.

See below what Brazilians who have Bolsonaro as their first choice for president think about four topics: economy, Amazon, religion and influence in the vote. Also understand their profile, generally more masculine, white, heterosexual, older, rich and educated.

The issues were questioned in the most recent survey, carried out with 2,556 people over 16 years old in 181 cities across the country on June 22 and 23. He was hired by Sheet and is registered with the TSE (Superior Electoral Court) under number BR-05166/2022.

The total margin of error is two percentage points. It is important to consider, however, that it increases when considering only those who will vote for each pre-candidate: it is three points among voters for Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT), four for Bolsonaro and seven for Ciro Gomes (PDT), always in stimulated research.

The other candidates for the position were not included because the sample is small.

1. ECONOMY

Bolsonaro voters are more optimistic about the economy: 48% think inflation will stay as it is or decrease, in contrast to 32% of the total electorate. Still, almost half of Bolsonaristas believe that it will increase.

The same climate of hope occurs with the expectation of unemployment – 7 in 10 supporters of the president do not believe it will get worse, against 50% of the general population. Only 10% report that the amount of food in their home has been insufficient in recent months, compared to 35% among Lula’s supporters and 20% among those of Ciro.

2. AMAZON

More than half of Bolsonaro supporters believe that the president fights rather than encourages deforestation, the invasion of indigenous lands and illegal hunting, fishing and mining in the Amazon. Even so, a fifth of those who intend to vote for him see such crimes encouraged.

Only 21% think he did less than he could to investigate the murders of Dom and Bruno, lower than 49% among all respondents. The smallest part of its supporters see consequences of the case for Brazil’s image abroad (36%) and for the actions of environmental protection organizations (39%).

3. RELIGION

Virtually all the voters of the president, who attracts more evangelicals, believe in God (98%, against 83% for Lula and 92% for Ciro). Most of them go to services or religious services once or more a week (64%) and say they contribute financially always or occasionally (73%).

The survey does not show significant differences from candidate to candidate when asked whether the religious service the respondent attends regularly makes policy recommendations (overall, about a fifth say it does). Among Bolsonaro voters, however, the rate of those who follow these guidelines is slightly higher.

4. INFLUENCE ON THE VOTE

The share of Bolsonaro supporters who feel influenced by external opinions when voting is similar to the total number of respondents when talking about close friends (15% report a lot of influence), children (22%), social networks (16%) and journalists (16%).

That number, however, is slightly higher among the president’s supporters when they are asked about their church leaders (32% feel very or a little influenced, versus 22% of the total).

5. PROFILE

The most recent poll shows that 93% of Bolsonaro supporters define themselves as heterosexual, a higher share than voters for Lula (82%) and Ciro (89%). Most Bolsonaristas are also men (59%), and almost half are over 45 years old.

He garners more votes than the two competitors in the ranks of voters who earn three to five and five to ten minimum wages a month, in addition to accumulating more followers than the PT among registered salaried employees, regular self-employed workers and businessmen.
