Google Pixel 6a review: Good things come in small packages

Google’s answer to mid-range smartphones in small bodies, the Pixel 6a lives up to the hype.

For those who like smaller phones, the Pixel 6a is £200 cheaper than its higher-end cousin, but it doesn’t leave much to be desired.

Like last year’s Google Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro, the Pixel 6a is powered by Google’s new Tensor chip, making it extremely fast and responsive.

The Pixel 6a feels exactly what you’d expect from your first touch. Pixel 6 smaller. A flat glass front with the familiar camera band on top. The band bump is a little less than that, so it doesn’t get in the way.

With a smaller 6.1-inch OLED screen, the Pixel 6a is as big as the iPhone 13, but it lacks the Pixel 6’s fast refresh rate.

When we reviewed the Pixel 6, we called it a “large device”, but it might not be ideal for those with smaller hands. This phone is the answer for those people. If you have small hands like mine, the Pixel 6a fits you like a glove. It’s also much lighter as the back is made of plastic instead of glass.

It comes in Charcoal, Chalk, and Sage colors and includes 128GB of storage and 6GB of RAM, as well as improved Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.

The battery lasts 24 hours. This is always better for smaller phones. It lasts around 34 hours between charges and multitasking, on par with the Pixel 6 and larger competitors.

As with all Pixel phones, the focus is on the camera, and the 6a’s dual rear cameras with ultra-wide lenses don’t disappoint. The 12-megapixel camera on the back doesn’t have a telephoto camera for zooming, but the quality doesn’t quite match the price.

The Pixel 6a also comes with advanced photography features like “Magic Eraser,” Google’s answer to Photoshop. This is a fun tool that allows you to remove annoying photo bombers. “True Tones” brings out many skin tones, and “Night Vision” is useful when you want to take beautiful pictures even in dark places.

I like the portrait mode and the 4K 60fps video quality. The 8-megapixel selfie camera is similar to the Pixel 6 model, which we know does a great job.

Google Pixel Buds Pro

Alongside the Pixel 6a, Google released its updated wireless earbuds, the Pixel Buds Pro.

It’s Google’s first product with active noise cancellation and it’s way ahead of its predecessors.

The earphones take some getting used to, but they fit snugly in your ear canals and provide maximum noise isolation.

According to Google, the Pixel Buds Pro use an integrated system with custom processors, algorithms, and speakers to reduce noise.

It also has up to 7 hours of battery life at moderate volume levels with noise cancellation on, and up to 11 hours with noise cancellation on.

The Pixel Buds Pro are great for calls, even in noisy and windy areas. Google says it uses bone conduction to analyze vibrations near your jaw to recognize your voice so it can be heard clearly wherever you are.

Being able to talk hands-free with the Google Assistant is an added bonus for Android users.

However, at £179, it’s not the best wireless headphone experience. You can buy it here.

Like the Pixel 6, the Pixel 6a ships with Android 12, but will soon get an update to Android 13.

Pixel 6a comes with YouTube Premium and 3 free months of Google One.

The lack of facial recognition and the need to use the fingerprint scanner or the pattern/PIN option to unlock the device remain drawbacks.

However, Google has kept the price competitive with the Pixel 6a, and at £399 for 128GB, it’s an affordable alternative to phones from Apple and Samsung.

So if you’re looking for a smaller Android phone, the Pixel 6a is the one for you.
