The modus operandi of other similar “strikes” abroad is being followed
The stolen files have been posted on the dark web from DESFA (Operator of the National Natural Gas System) the cybercriminals, that is hundreds of gigabytes of data.
In the so-called dark web, shadowy users access services without being detected.
Hackers infected DESFA’s system with ransomware malware for extortion in order to extract ransoms. This is the first known case in Greece, and follows the modus operandi of other similar “strikes” abroad.
Cybercriminals use many ransomware techniques, among them disk encryption ransomware that encrypts MBR (Master Boot Record) structures and/or critical file system structures and therefore prevents the user from accessing the operating system, or Crypto-ransomware that encrypts user files stored on disk.
So far, the hackers have not disclosed their objectives, i.e. the usual extortion of money or are there other objectives given the sensitive role of DESFA in the natural gas market of our country and the wider region amid the war in Ukraine.
DESFA however, he assured on Saturday that “it continues to supply natural gas to all entry and exit points of the country safely and adequately”.
The Administrator made it clear that he does not engage with cybercriminals.
