Assisted suicide “capsule”: “Dr Death” wants to make it available in Switzerland and provokes reactions

A company created a “capsule” of assisted suicide with 3D technology and decided to sell its product in Switzerland.

The reason for the Sarco company with the motto “leave (that is, he died) in style”, which seems to have provoked various reactions. However, she assures that her product does not violate Swiss law, although many dispute this conclusion and are critical.

Assisted suicide, when one provides the means to another to end one’s life, has been considered legal in Switzerland for years.

In 2020 alone, approximately 1,300 people died in this way in the Central European country.

The most common method of assisted suicide at the moment is to inject some “lethal” fluids.

Sarco’s new machine modifies this process, as it is a “capsule” full of nitrogen. In this way, within 10 minutes, the person loses consciousness. The machine is activated by the user himself, while it also has an emergency button, in order to stop the process.

Daniel Huerlimann, a legal expert and assistant professor at the University of St Gallen, was summoned by Sarco to investigate whether the use of the suicide machine would violate any Swiss law.

He told the BBC that his findings suggested that the capsule “was not a medical device” and would not be covered by the Swiss Therapeutic Act.

Respectively, the Dignitas organization took a position on the issue, which considers that a medical and professional procedure is impossible and should not be replaced by a technological solution.

If the machine gets the green light from the competent services of Switzerland, then Sarco will have managed to de-medicalize the death process, commented the creator of the capsule, Dr Philip Nitschke.

“We want to remove any kind of psychiatric visa from the procedure and allow the person to control the procedure,” said the doctor, nicknamed “Dr Death”.
