Finally the “flight mode” on airplanes: Calls also in the air via 5G

by

The Commission will reserve 5G network frequencies so that travelers can use their mobile phones in flight without restrictions

The first message air passengers receive when the plane is about to take off is to turn off their mobile phones or put them on ‘flight mode’.

This directive is going to disappear as the Commission is going to define specific frequencies of the new 5G telephony that will allow the connectivity of mobile phones in flight.

In practice, this ruling will empower airlines to allow customers to make and receive phone calls, send sms and use data just as they would on the ground.

The service will be provided via special network equipment called a ‘picocell’, which will connect the plane’s network to the ground via satellite.

The sky is no longer the limit when it comes to the possibilities offered by ultra-fast connectivitysaid Thierry Breton, Commissioner for the Internal Market.

Airlines will be able to provide 5G service on their planes, according to the latest update from the European Commission on in-flight communications.

To date, regulations require passengers to turn off cell phones or turn on “flight mode” before takeoff and throughout the flight as a safety measure to prevent interference with other electrical or telecommunications systems on the plane .

Connection to wireless devices such as mobile phones, tablets or laptops is only possible via an internal Wi-Fi network provided by the airline, generally as a paid service.

However, the European Commission is going to activate a specific frequency band for the use of 5G, making sure that it does not interfere with any of the electronic devices on the plane, so that the traveler can use his mobile phone at all times.

However, this will only work at low altitudes and if the weather conditions are favorable. In addition, the pilot-in-command will be able to order mobile phones to be switched off at any time if he deems it appropriate.

“5G will enable innovative services for people and growth opportunities for European companies,” Breton said.

It will be safe but not free

However, as reported by El Pais, the fact that you will be able to use your mobile phone, doesn’t mean it will be free. All indications are that mobile phone companies, and perhaps airlines, will ask for money for this provision, as to have a connection to the terrestrial networks of more than one country, roaming costs will be incurred.

In addition, airlines will have to make significant investments to install the equipment which allows them to connect terrestrial mobile networks to the plane in flight via satellite.
