Chinese hackers stole millions in US Covid aid

by

Chinese hackers have stolen tens of millions of dollars from US government relief packages for the pandemic since 2020, the secret service said on Monday (6).

The secret service declined to provide details, but confirmed an NBC News report that the Chinese hacking team allegedly responsible is known in the security research community as APT41 or Winnti.

APT41 is a cybercriminal group that has conducted a series of Chinese government-backed cyber intrusions and financially motivated data breaches, according to experts.

Several members of the hacking group were indicted in 2019 and 2020 by the US Department of Justice for spying on more than 100 companies, including software development companies, telecom providers, social media companies and video game developers.

“Unfortunately, the Chinese Communist Party has chosen a different path to make China safe for cybercriminals as long as they attack computers outside of China and steal intellectual property useful to China,” former Deputy Attorney General Jeffrey Rosen said at the time. .

The Chinese Embassy in Washington said that China has always “firmly opposed and cracked down on all forms of cyber theft and hacking” and that it has opposed “baseless accusations” against the country over cybersecurity.
