Faperj and Serrapilheira will offer research grants to black and indigenous scientists

Faperj (Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado do Rio de Janeiro) and the Serrapilheira Institute will launch in January 2023 a public notice offering scholarships for black and indigenous scientists.

The eight selected candidates will work as postdoctoral fellows and receive a monthly grant of R$8,000, in addition to up to R$700,000 to finance research for three years, renewable for another two years.

R$ 100,000 will also be made available for the integration and training of people from underrepresented groups in the research teams.

To participate, the candidate must have completed a doctorate in any area of ​​scientific knowledge between January 1, 2012 and December 31, 2022 —the deadline is extended by up to two years for women with children.

Other criteria are: not having any type of employment relationship with science and technology institutions, presenting a project in the field of ecology and indicating the research group that will be part of.

Applications can be made between March 21 and April 24, 2023, and selection will take place in two stages: analysis of the pre-proposal and the complete proposal. The evaluation will be conducted by scientists from international institutions.

According to the creators, one of the objectives of the initiative is to encourage the exchange of ideas between scientists in the field of ecology. To this end, the selected candidates will join research groups in the state of Rio de Janeiro in which they have never worked.

Another goal is to promote new lines of research in ecology, helping to develop Brazil’s leadership potential in combating the climate crisis.
