Elon Musk’s twitter decided to abandon the EU code against fake news, causing the strong displeasure of the Commission.
The Commissioner of the Commission for the Internal Market, Thierry Breton, in his post on twitter clarified, however, that his obligations remain.
“You can run, but you can’t hide. In addition to voluntary commitments, combating disinformation will be a legal obligation under the DSA (Digital Services Act) from August 25,” he reminded.
“Our teams will be ready to implement the law,” he warned.
The European code of practice against online disinformation, drawn up in 2018, brings together around 30 signatories – internet giants such as Meta (Facebook, Instagram), Google, Twitter, Microsoft and TikTok, but also smaller platforms such as advertising professionals industry and that of fact-checking and non-governmental organizations.
The signatories participated in drafting the text, which contains about forty commitments aimed at better cooperation with the information verification industry and depriving fake news sites of advertising.
Twitter’s departure comes as no surprise to Thierry Breton’s services. Since buying the social network six months ago, billionaire Elon Musk has loosened restrictions on problematic content and appears to have strengthened voices notorious for spreading misinformation on the platform.
“If Elon Musk is not serious about the code, it might be better to abandon it,” commented a European Commission official contacted by AFP yesterday, Friday.
