The Slovak AirCar flying car received the green light to fly in the skies today, after the Bratislava Transport Authority issued it with a certificate of airworthiness.
“AirCar certification paves the way for the production of flying, efficient cars,” said Stephen Klein, founder and CEO of KleinVision, which designed and built the hybrid vehicle.
“This is an official confirmation of our ability to transform long-distance travel,” he said in a statement.
In aviation, the “average distance” corresponds to flights of less than 2,000 kilometers.
AirCar made its first urban flight in June 2021.
It has a 1,600 hp BMW engine and can take off from a 300-meter runway. It flies at a speed of 170 kilometers per hour and has a range of 1,000 kilometers.
The car automatically turns into an airplane at the touch of a button. The process takes only 3 minutes, according to the manufacturer.
To receive the certification, the vehicle made 70 hours of test flights and 200 take-offs and landings.
