The new DAIDALOS supercomputer will be the largest in the country, and one of the most powerful in Europe, and on the list of the top 500 systems worldwide in performance (T500) and efficient use (GREEN500)
The Ministry of Digital Governance announces that as of today, Friday, December 29, 2023, the announcement for the project “Development of a new high-performance computing system” known as the supercomputer “DAIDALOS.
The project is financed by the National Recovery and Resilience Plan “Greece 2.0” with funding from the European Union – NextGenerationEU, the Public Investment Program, as well as by the European organization European High Performance Computing Joint Undertaking – EuroHPC JU, with a total budget of 41,569,000 .00 euros (including VAT).
The consultation process will be conducted electronically through the “Prometheus” system of ESIDIS for a period of 45 days until Monday, February 12, 2024, at the online address www.promitheus.gov.gr.
The responsibility for the development and operation of the DAIDALOS supercomputer lies with the National Technology and Research Infrastructure Network (EDYTE S.A. – GRNET), a body of the Ministry of Digital Governance.
It is pointed out that the object of the Tender is the supply and installation of advanced computing equipment, storage space and software, for the implementation of the new high-performance computing system “DAEDALUS”. In addition, the tender includes accompanying training, installation, configuration and multi-year maintenance services.
Information about “DAIDALOS”
The new DAIDALOS supercomputer will be the largest in the country, and one of the most powerful in Europe, and on the list of the top 500 systems worldwide in terms of performance (Top 500) and efficient use (GREEN500). It will be installed in the Lavrio Technological Cultural Park of the National Technical University of Athens, in the renovated building of the former Electric Station, a recognized monument of modern industrial heritage.
The planning of the facility in Lavrio has been done with environmental sustainability in mind. It is pointed out that it will be powered by renewable energy systems and modern cooling systems will be used, so that there are low energy costs.
DAEDALOS will be 120 times more powerful than the existing ARIS supercomputer, performing sixty million billion floating-point operations per second. Its architecture is ideal for hosting larger and more heterogeneous applications, combining high-performance computing with Artificial Intelligence, machine learning and big data analytics.
It is worth pointing out that the new supercomputer will have a central role, among others, in research to develop new more efficient and reliable services to serve citizens through natural language requests, for personalized medicine, fire protection, spatial planning , but also for smart mobility and autonomous vehicles.
