OnlyFans launches NFT profile pictures feature

OnlyFans, an online subscription service known for adult content, said on Thursday that it has launched a feature for users to display verified NFTs as profile pictures.

“Our mission is to empower creators to reach their full potential,” OnlyFans Chief Executive Ami Gan told Reuters. “This feature is the first step in exploring the role NFTs can play on our platform.”

The platform launched in 2016 grew during the pandemic, becoming a way for creators to make money by selling content directly to subscribers.

OnlyFans will only accept NFTs registered on the ethereum blockchain. Gan said the creators’ NFT profile pictures will show an ethereum icon to mark them as authentic.

The UK-based company, which said it introduced the feature in December, joins social media companies like Twitter and Reddit, which have explored ways to embed the digital tokens on their platforms.

Alphabet’s YouTube this week crafted its own plans around NFTs, saying it may offer ways to verify the legitimacy of digital assets using its video library. Instagram boss Adam Mosseri also said the company is working on NFTs.

Sales of NFTs have soared in the past year, but critics say fraud, copyright theft and other predatory behavior are all too common.
