Opinion – Sou Ciência: The ghost of the dictatorship is still alive

Since the beginning of April, many activities have been carried out to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the military coup in Brazil? and also to prevent history from repeating itself one day. The “legacies” of the dictatorship are countless and mark our society to this day: the militarism of the police, security policy as a policy of extermination and mass incarceration; the large construction projects and their mega-construction companies, which promoted countless cases of corruption, social and environmental impacts, forced removals and deaths of workers (remembering that Brazil broke records for work accidents, especially in construction); the indigenous genocide and attack on their reserves; violence in the countryside, with armed groups against the peasant leagues and their current movements for agrarian reform; a certain patriotism that only values ​​what is foreign, attacks its own citizens and despises our cultures and traditions; the maintenance of the Cold War’s demode discourse with the permanent “communist threat”, today a delusional narrative – but still effective in attracting supporters; the Barracks and Military Schools, which are still guided by Cold War manuals and an imaginary and parallel history of Brazil, ideological and without factual research; the general disinformation that follows as a rule, including the war on books and Paulo Freire, and the attack on universities, intellectuals and scientists.
