OpenAI is losing its… voice because Scarlett Johansson. Or to specify one of her voices. After many people noticed that one of the chatbot’s voices sounded too much like Joachim Phoenix’s AI partner (Johansson) in Spike Jonze’s 2013 film Her, the company is suspending that voice for now.

Johansson’s voice-like voice, called Sky, was part of OpenAI’s GPT-4o, released last week. The updated AI chatbot can answer users’ spoken questions to mimic a real-time conversation. However, the connection to “Her” was mentioned by the CEO of OpenAI Sam Altman, who after the presentation shared on X a one-word post mentioning “Her”. This move by Altman shows that the choice of OpenAI was probably not accidental.

‘Her’ trailer:

In a statement on Monday, the company said: “We believe that AI voices should not intentionally imitate distinctive voice of a celebrity – Sky’s voice is not an imitation of Scarlett Johansson but belongs to one different professional actress which uses her own natural speaking voice’. OpenAI said, however, that “to protect their privacy, we cannot share the names of our actors.”

“We’ve heard questions about how we choose the voices in ChatGPT, especially for Sky,” OpenAI said. “We are working to stop using Sky while we deal with them.”

The advanced voice features that were introduced at the model’s spring upgrade event are not yet available to ChatGPT users. OpenAI has announced that they will be available to subscribers in the coming weeks.

So far she has not been known some reaction from the 39-year-old actress.
