The new agency will employ 140 technology experts, lawyers, policy experts, economists and administrative assistants
The European Commission today announced the creation of a new artificial intelligence (AI) agency to implement the EU’s new, world-leading AI regulation.
The new IT service is part of the Commission, based in Brussels and will be part of the administrative structure of the Directorate-General for Communications Networks, Content and Technology. It will employ 140 specialists in technology, lawyers, policy experts, economists and administrative assistants.
“With the new IT Service and its 140 talented women and men, the Commission will have the necessary expertise to drive forward the implementation of the IT Act and strengthen Europe’s role as a global standard-setter in the field of IT. The agency will promote a European IT ecosystem that is innovative, competitive and respects EU rules and values,” said Internal Market Commissioner Thierry Breton.
The AI regulation, which was finally approved on May 21 by EU member states, foresees the establishment of an AI agency that will play a key role in implementing the new legislation.
According to the Commission’s announcement, the AI service aims to enable the future development, application and use of AI in a way that promotes social and economic benefits and innovation, while mitigating risks. It will ensure the coherent implementation of the AI act. This will be achieved with the support of governance bodies in the Member States. The TN Agency will also directly enforce the rules for general purpose TN models. In collaboration with AI developers, the scientific community and other stakeholders, the AI Service will coordinate the development of codes of best practice, conduct testing and evaluation of general purpose AI models, request information and impose sanctions when necessary.
The AI Service will also work to promote research and innovation in the field of reliable AI and position the EU as a leader in international debates.
To ensure informed decision-making, the IT Service will work with Member States and the wider expert community through dedicated forums and expert groups. At EU level, the AI Service will work closely with the European Council on Artificial Intelligence, which is made up of representatives of the Member States.
The TN service will come into effect on June 16. The first meeting of the TN board should take place by the end of June.
