The Ministry of Digital Governance, with the aim of upgrading the country’s public digital infrastructure, announces today, June 25, the announcement of an Open International Tender for the project “Development of a new high-performance computing system”, the supercomputer “DAEDALUS (DAEDALUS)’.

The project is funded by the National Recovery and Resilience Plan “Greece 2.0” with funding from the European Union – NextGenerationEU, the Public Investment Program, as well as from the European organization European High Performance Computing Joint Undertaking – EuroHPC JU, with a total budget 41.9 million euros (including Taxes.).

The object of the Competition is supply and installation of advanced computing equipment, storage space and softwarefor the implementation of the new high-performance computing system “DAEDALUS” (DAEDALUS) in the new Data Center in Technological Cultural Park of Lavrio (TPPL).

It is worth noting that the new national supercomputer DAIDALOS will be the largest in the country, and one of the strongest in Europewhile it is expected to be included in the list of the top 500 systems worldwide in terms of performance (TOP500) and energy efficiency (GREEN500).

The architecture of the new supercomputer is ideal for hosting the largest and most heterogeneous applications, combining high-performance computing with Artificial Intelligence, machine learning and big data analysis. It is expected to have a central role, among other things, in research for the development of new more efficient and reliable services for service to citizens through natural language requests, for personalized medicine, fire protection, spatial planning, but also for smart mobility and autonomous vehicles.

It is pointed out that DAIDALOS will be powered by renewable energy systems and modern cooling systems will be used, so that there are low energy costs and minimal environmental burden.

It is expected to have a power of >60 Petaflops and will be 120 times more powerful than the existing ARIS supercomputer, performing sixty million billion (that’s sixty four million – 60,000,000,000,000,000) floating point operations per second. In addition, it will be hybrid, having both high-density central processing units (CPUs) and accelerator units.

The tender has a closing date for submission of tenders on 02.09.2024 and will be conducted electronically through the “Prometheus” system of ESIDIS at the online address www.promitheus.gov.gr, with tender code: 352893. The responsibility for the development and operation of the hyper- DAIDALOS computer has the National Technology and Research Infrastructure Network (EDYTE S.A. – GRNET), body of the Ministry of Digital Governance.

The design of the installation of the supercomputer will take place in the Technological Cultural Park of Lavrio, in a space granted by the Company for Exploitation and Management of the Property of the National Technical University of Athens (EADIP-EMTU). The preparation for the configuration of the area of electro-mechanical equipment and facilities of the new Data Center in the building of the former Power Station is carried out in a joint effort between specialized staff of EDYTE – GRNET, with many years of experience in the operation of Data Centers, a group of elite architects of the National Metsovio of the Technical University (NTPA) and executives of the Technological Cultural Park of Lavrio (TPPL) which owns the premises.

The project is part of the strategic strengthening of the country’s Public digital infrastructures, an action of the Digital Transformation Bible 2020-2025 of the Ministry of Digital Governance.
