YouTube blocks channels linked to Russia Today and SPUTNIK across Europe, with immediate effect, according to a statement.
Respectively, Meta Platforms, owner of Facebook, will restrict access to the Russian state media RT and Sputnik throughout the European Union, as announced today on behalf of the company by the person in charge of international relations Nick Clegg.
According to him, the company had received requests from several governments and the EU to take further measures in relation to the Russian state media on its platforms.
The chairman of the Culture Committee of the French Senate, Laurent Lafon, also wrote a letter to the chairman of the French audiovisual regulator, Ross-Olivier Mestre, requesting the suspension of the television station and the website Russia Today in France.
Commission proposes ban on Russia Today and SPUTNIK access to European media market
The European Commission is seeking the approval of European Union member states to impose a ban on Russia Today and SPUTNIK accessing the European media market regardless of their distribution network.
The measure means EU administrators will be barred from broadcasting, facilitating or otherwise contributing to RT and Sputnik content, said European Industry Commissioner Thierry Breton.
The measure includes cable, satellite transmission, via IPTV, with platforms or video playback applications, whether new or pre-installed.
The measure will also apply to licenses and broadcasting agreements, which will be canceled.
The European Commissioner expects the green light from European countries during the day.
