OR Blue Origin carried six space adventurers during a short round-trip flight today, including the youngest woman ever to travel above 100km.

That mission, called NS-26, was the eighth consecutive manned space flight for the company founded by the billionaire Jeff Bezoswhich seeks to establish itself in the field of short suborbital flights.

The little rocket New Shepard took off shortly after 0800 local time from west Texas. Cheers from passengers echoed through the live broadcast of the flight, which lasted 10 minutes.

Karsen Kitchen, a 21-year-old student, became the youngest woman to cross the Karman Line, which marks at a height of 100 kilometers the boundary of space, according to an international treaty.

The crew also included Rob Ferrell, the first NASA-funded researcher to experience a private suborbital flight, according to Blue Origin. This very experience is expected to help better understand how plant genes respond to an environment where gravity is limited.

“Being there in the dark of space (…), there’s no way to describe how impressive it is,” Rob Ferrell said shortly after the flight.

Passengers were able to hover for a while inside the capsule and observe the curvature of the Earth.

Blue Origin has now carried 43 people into space, including Jeff Bezos himself, during the first manned flight of New Shepard in July 2021.

The ticket price has not been disclosed.
