A complex issue that concerned microbiologists for a decade was solved in just two days by a new tool artificial intelligence.
Professor Jose R. Penantes and his team at Imperial College in London have been investigating for years in which some hypermalobia develop resistance to antibiotics.
However, when they asked their main research question to the “co-scientist”-an AI tool developed by Google-something happened to them. The tool came to the same conclusion in just 48 hours!
Professor Penantes expressed his shock to the BBC, as his own research had not been published and was therefore not available in public data accessed by the AI system.
“I was shopping with someone and I had to say, ‘Sorry, I need an hour to edit it,” he said on the BBC Radio Four’s Today.
In fact, the first thing he did was write an email on Google by asking if the AI had access to his computer.
The company confirmed that this had not happened, making the tool performance even more impressive.
The decade that scientists needed to complete their research also included the process of confirming the results, which is time consuming. However, if they had the outcome of artificial intelligence from the beginning, they would have saved significant time and resources.
Professor Penantes stressed that the AI tool was not only confined to confirming their conclusions, but also proposed four other cases, all scientifically well -founded.
“One of the scenarios he proposed, we hadn’t even thought about it, and now we’re working on it,” he added.
