The new national supercomputer will execute 89 million billion (eighty -nine four million) acts of mobile subdivision per second
The start of the implementation of the new National supercomputer “DAEDALUS»And the Lavrion Data Center announced by the Minister of Digital Governance, Dimitris Papastergioutoday, March 26th, from the Lavrion Technological Cultural Park (ICT), where the new supercomputer will be built.
Between National Technology and Research Infrastructure Network (EYDIS SA – GRNET), Body of the Ministry of Digital Government and of ‘Hewlett Packard Enterprise’the contract was signed for the construction of the supercomputer, and the signature for the electromechanical equipment and the design of the space with “Mainsys SA” was preceded.
The project has a total budget of EUR 58.9 million (including VAT) and is part of the country’s public digital infrastructure as its action as its action Bible digital transformation 2020-2025 of the Ministry of Digital Governance. Implemented by EYDITE SA, a body of the Ministry of Digital Governance, in the context of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan “Greece 2.0” with the funding of the European Union – NextGenerationeu through the EUROHPC JU (European High Performance Computing Joint Joint Undertaking).
More specifically the “DAIDALOS” will be implemented in two stages and will be completed in collaboration with EYDITY SA with two contractors in which public competitions were awarded:
(a) with the Contractor “Hewlett Packard Enterprise” with the subject of the supply and installation of advanced computing equipment, storage and software, and educational services, with a budget of 41 million euros (including VAT), and
(b) with the contractor “Mainsys SA” which awarded the configuration of electromechanical infrastructure and the formation of a new Data Center in the Lavrion Technological Cultural Park, with a budget of € 17.9 million (including VAT).
The Lavrion Data Center It meets the requirements of the International Data Certification Organization “Uptime Institute” on its availability and reliability, while its operation follows the security policies of EYDIS Data Centers SA.
The “DAIDALLOS” supercomputer, with Power 89 Petaflops will It is the strongest computational system in Greece and one of the top in Europe.
Its development is an important step in the country’s scientific and technological development, enhancing research and innovation opportunities in areas such as artificial intelligence, personalized medicine, meteorology, large volume of data and the development of smart transport systems.
The infrastructure of the supercomputer is designed to sustainable to exploit renewable energy sources and advanced cooling systems, which significantly reduce energy consumption.
THE New national supercomputer will be 150 times stronger than existing ARIS supercomputer; executing 89 million billions (ie eighty -nine four million millions) Mobile subdivisions per second, and is expected to be ranked among the first 20 performance in the list of top 500 performances worldwide (Green500).
With its computational capabilities it will meet the growing needs of the research and scientific community, attracting additional young scientists and contributing to world -class research. It is expected to be available in early 2026, for use by the scientific and academic community, industry and public sector throughout Europe, reinforcing Greece’s position on the world map of high computers.
It is recalled that “DAIDALOS” and the new Data Center will be installed in the Lavrion Technological Cultural Park of the National Technical University of Athens, in the historic building of the former electric station, a recognized monument to the modern industrial heritage of 1,500 sq.m. The exploitation of the site is an iconic investment in the field of high -performance computational (HPC) and Artificial Intelligence (AI), enhancing the role of the area as a cutting -edge technological hub.
It will be the computational core of the Greek “factory” Ai Factory, which will promote technological progress in areas such as health, environmental viability, culture and language. The implementation of the AI Factory “Pharos” is expected to begin in April 2025. Greece, as one of the first seven European countries and a total of thirteen to acquire their own “factory” TN, is established among the pioneers in responsible and effective use of TN with significant benefits for society and economy.
Digital governance Minister Dimitris Papastergiou said: “From Lavrio, a point where the 2nd Industrial Revolution unfolded about 120 years ago, we are taking an important step towards our position in the 4th Industrial Revolution and the passage of artificial intelligence. We methodically establish as a pioneer country in the responsible use of TN and emerging technologies.
With the development of the supercomputer “DAIDALOS” we will have one of the strongest computational systems in the world on which we will build policies for the country’s “tomorrow”, which is directly related to TN. Its construction was also a key factor in the choice of Greece, among the first seven European countries, which will acquire their own “factory” TN. Where there was once a factory, a new, faster, more innovative will be made, which with modern infrastructure will give young scientists the opportunity to evolve and produce innovative solutions. The computational capabilities of the “DAIDALOS” will act as a driving force for the development of the research and business community. It is worth noting that “DAIDALOS” will be one of the fastest machinery in Europe and the world. Public bodies, universities, start -ups, research centers will be able to use its potential from developing applications, services and products for the benefit of citizens, contributing to the country’s development. We are all moving together on the next digital page of Greece with solid bases to take advantage of all the opportunities available. By right decisions TN will go the country forward. “
The Chairman of the NTUA, Emeritus Professor of NTUA Stefanos Kollias, said: “DAIDALOS is a technological leap for our country. Its operation will enhance Greece’s research and innovative dynamics and will significantly contribute to the development of advanced technologies as it will also be used in the implementation of the AI Factory “Pharos”. EYTH confirms its commitment to the triptych infrastructure – data – talent, which it considers as the basis for the widespread adoption of artificial intelligence in public sector services, with the aim of continuously improving the quality of life of citizens. “
Hewlett Packard Enterprise Managing Director Michalis Kasimiotis said: “We are proud to be proud to be proud that we as a Hewlett Packard Enterprise, we are contributing to the implementation of the supercomputer” DAIDALOS “, a landmark project for Greece and its scientific and research community. “DAIDALOS” is not just a supercomputer – it is the bridge that will lead Greece to the new era of technology and digital innovation enabling Greece’s brightest minds to express their talent. We are particularly pleased that through our know -how in high performance infrastructure, we will actually support the creation of a cutting -edge computing system that will accelerate research, innovation and sustainable development. We are committed to providing top high performance solutions that will allow the scientific and academic community, public administration and business world, to fully utilize the capabilities of computing power and artificial intelligence applications. This project will place the country in the world’s scene of advanced technology. “
MAINSYS SA CEO George Plavoukos said: “Mainsys takes over with a state -of -the -art data center, launching new foundations for the technological superiority of Greece. This project is not just about infrastructure is an innovation accelerator that will shield the country’s research and technological dynamics. The “Daedalos” and AI Factory “Pharos” put us on the map as pioneers in the race to integrate artificial intelligence, a race that we can lead at European level. Mainsys invests in the power of data and, above all, in the talent of its people. Because real innovation is not just a matter of technology – it is a matter of perspective, ambition and boldness. “
The event was the Minister of Digital Governance Dimitrios Papastergiou, the Emeritus Professor of the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) and President of EYDIS SA Stefanos Kollias, Professor of National Technical University of Athens and National Technical University of Athens Dimitrios Kaliambakos, Managing Director Greece & Cyprus by “Hewlett Packard Enterprise” Michalis Kasimiotis, Managing Director of “Mainsys SA” Georgios Plavoukos, Director of Institute of Informatics and Telecommunications NTUA “Dimokritos” Minister of Digital Governance Vassilis Karkatzounis.
