The impressive cave in Amorgos came to “light” by accident, after the island’s French resident’s suggestion
The deeper cave of the Cyclades, reaching 132 meters, with wells and halls with strikingly rich decoration, discovered a scientific mission in Amorgos, in the area of Agios Stefanos.
Indeed, the cave came to the “light” after the suggestion of a French resident of the island and is therefore now the official name “Both of the French”, registered by the Ephorate of Paleoanthropology – Speleology.
The scientific mission “Amorgos Cave Expedition 2024” was held on the island last fall, with the help and sponsorship of the Municipality of Amorgos and will be repeated next October.
The leader and organizer of the mission was the cave-explorer Prodromos Koulelis who, as he says to the Athens/Macedonian News Agency, was one of those who reached the bottom of the cave, descent to 90 meters vertically!
The deeper Cave of the Cyclades, without which it means that no other deeper can be found, was first recorded in the autumn of 2024, biological samples were taken and the results of the research in a scientific journal are expected to be published.
How the cave found
“Looking for the island for caves with the members of the mission, a Frenchman living there, Lonais, told us that he found one in a walk behind Tholaria. I told him that if the information is really true, he would get his name because the one who is mapping is baptized. So he came to our team and after a difficult hiking landscape, full of stones, paddles and gradient, we found it.
The cave went down to about 35 meters but not a continuation and then Lonais, who had the relative training training, asked to go down. So exploring the space, he found a slit behind a boulder, from which there was the opening to go down the rest of the cave, “Mr Koulelis describes, clarifying that” bonus “they call the island on the island.
Going down in the discovered cave himself, he spoke of the awe he felt and the fear that exists in the back of the mind and sleeps, something you learn to manage.
“Although we are constantly discovering caves, the beauty of nature is incredible that many people cannot see,” says Mr. Koulelis, a cheese maker in the profession and a cave, “because he has crazy with it” as he typically says.
“In early October, we will go back to Amorgos because we had information from locals about some other caves. We do not know the spots safely, because there are caves that are not marked, and by locating and passing through a small hole that is equal, you can find yourself in a mess, ”he concludes.
The team of “Amorgos Cave Expedition 2024”, consisting of 18 cave explorers and scientists, recorded 21 in total known and unknown caves and caves, of which 12 were explored and studied.
More details on the cave -mission in Amorgos will be given within the framework of Cavers FEST 2025 – AGRAFA, GREECE, which will take place from 16 to 18 May 2025.
