Artificial intelligence (AI) has become an integral part of everyday life, deeply affecting the way young people are trained in Greece. At Podcast Ai Greece*, Minas Marios Kontis talks to Constantine Skianis, a teacher who not only recognizes the power of technology, but also knows how to make it creatively in education.
Chatgpt: Ecclesiasm and challenge for students
As Mr Skianis typically states: The first source and the first aid, the first tool in other words used by young people is chatgpt. “
The professor points out the danger of the uncontrolled use of artificial intelligence, saying: “Children go easily to chatgpt, they believe anything they tell them and incorporate it into their work without confirming it.”
In fact, he stresses the serious problem of reducing critical thinking, “in the end this may make us think a little less. There have been some articles that show that those who use the more chatgpt are decreasing their critical thinking.”
The battle with AI in the amphitheater
Instead of fighting technology, Mr Skianis uses it cleverly for the benefit of his students. Replaced the traditional written exam with live competitions on the Kaggle platform, making learning more interactive and exciting: “I do not do a written exam in the end. I open a competition in Kaggle, a platform where live competitions are held, and can be involved.”
Students are invited to solve real problems with measurable results: “They just put some problems and data and you are in and trying to solve the problem. There is a metric that objectively evaluates how well the problem has been solved.”
He explains the practical application in his class: “I give them a problem, I open an in-class smaller in-scale competition, and the kids are raising their solutions and in the end how they went.”
This is a different way of teaching and examining: “I think this is a different way of examining classic glue, because students compete with each other. I am not only interested in who will get the highest degree, but I want to see things that did not work and why. This is the reason for them to be a little bit of a new thing.
Blue Ai: The Greek Startup that impressed France
Along with his academic career, Mr. Skianis has founded the Startup Blue AI, which develops advanced models of artificial intelligence for translating medical conditions, collaborating with the French State. He states that the accuracy of translations is vital in such specialized texts.
The French example and the Greek bet
In the discussion, Mr. Skianis told stories from his student life in France when he was studying next to the founders of the now famous Mistral. “French universities place a great emphasis on mathematics, which I would like to see in Greece more,” he comments.
Prime Host: AI in Greek tourism
Mr Skianis introduces artificial intelligence in the field of tourism through the Prime Host platform, which automates communication between Airbnb owners and visitors: “A owner can save up to one hour a day, leaving AI answer the most frequent questions.”
Tip on young people: Don’t be afraid of technology
Mr Skiani’s advice to young people is clear and optimistic: “Don’t be afraid of artificial intelligence. Use it to improve your life. It’s here to stay.”
