The National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NCSR) It is at the top of Southeast Europe, winning 1st place between Greek and Cypriot universities and 237th place worldwideaccording to the new ranking “Webometrics Ranking Web of Universities”. The annual evaluation includes 32,000 higher education institutions from 200 countries, underlining the important position of the NCSR internationally.

The published rankings bring to 2nd place in Greece the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (249th world), followed by National Technical University (378th), the Patras University (524H) and the University of Crete (573th), while the first Cypriot university, the University of Cyprusranks 619th internationally. The extensive table below presents the ranking rates, based on three dimensions: visibility, openness and scientific excellence.

Ranking of Greek and Cypriot universities

The substance of this year’s ranking is summarized in the following elements:
First The NCSR with a total ranking of 237, and particularly high openness performance (Openness Rank: 85).
Following are the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (249), the National Technical University of Athens (378), the University of Patras (524) and the University of Crete (573).
From Cyprus, in the highest position of the University of Cyprus (619).
The table includes a total of 105 institutions, recording the relative dynamics of each institution at level world visibility.

Today is considered one of the most reliable rankings as it is based on measurable and verifiable Internet data rather than subjective estimates or questionnaires.

Webometrics methodology

Universities are evaluated on the basis of three basic parameters:

  • Resonance (Visibility – 50%): The popularity and gravity of the Foundation is reflected by the number of external links to its website.
  • Open Content (Transparency / Openness – 10%): Measures the volume of scientific publications that are recruited on Google Scholar and hetero -reports in the Foundation’s research work.
  • Excellence (Excellence / Scholar – 40%): The institution’s presence in the top 10% of the most reported publications in 27 scientific fields (Scopus and Scimago, 2019–2023) is evaluated.
