Spotify has warned that European users will not be able to enjoy the latest version of its application, unless the EU digital market law is strictly applied to Apple.
Apple recently changed the rules of the App Store in an attempt to avoid huge fines by European Commission for breach of its rules of fair competition in the digital space.
However, Spotify claims that these changes prevent her from sharing important information about prices with usersunlike the US, where a decision issued in May by a federal judge allowed the company to launch a version of the application that freely notifies prices and bids.
This feature is vital to sell products such as sound booksas the company says.
The service has been “enthusiastically embraced” by users in the US, said Averi Gardiner, a world -class Spotify competitive director, at an event held this week in Brussels. She explained that Spotify cannot immediately inform European users of how to purchase products such as audio books, according to applicable terms of her contract with Apple. On the other hand, the search for an alternative contract would not be financially viablehe added.
“If you can’t tell people how much the products cost or where to buy them, they don’t buy much”, Gardiner observed, comparing the situation in Europe with the US.
‘US Government has taken decisive measures’he said. “Unfortunately, for Europe the same cannot be said – the law on digital markets has not yet produced the same results for consumers in Europe.”
The Commission is carefully considering Apple’s proposal to reform App Store, which came as an immediate response to the law on digital markets.
If the Commission considers the changes inadequate, Apple could face significant fines, in addition to the fine of € 500 million imposed in April.
Gardiner pointed out that Spotify wants to bring the new version of the application to Europe.
A committee spokesman said the regulation is currently allowing developers to inform users of better prices and that EU executive power is seeking the view of third parties concerned about Apple’s proposed compliance solution.
Apple’s spokesman said the current version of the EU Spotify app is already notifying bids, including prices on prices. ‘In essence, their complaint is about trying to gain limited access in All Apple tools without paying for the value offered by Apple‘he replied.
