THE pro-Russian former President of Moldova (Moldova) Igor Dodon was set under arrest as suspected of treason and corruptionannounced the prosecutor, in a country where the tension between pro-Western and pro-Russian increased with war in Ukraine.
“Igor Dodon was arrested this morning and remanded in custody for 72 hours. It is located in the temporary detention center of the National Center for the Fight against Corruption “said Mariana Kiorpec, a spokeswoman for the attorney general, adding that searches were being carried out at offices linked to the former president and at his residence in Chisinau, the capital of the former Soviet republic.
An investigation is being conducted against him for “betrayal of the State”, “passive corruption”, “financing of a political party by a criminal organization” and “illegal enrichment”.
Igor Dodon is suspected of accepting money in 2019 from oligarch and political ally Vlad Plachotnuts, who has since been exiled and is the target of US sanctions.
Igor Dodon served as President of Moldova from 2016 to 2020 and was openly supported by Moscow.
The population of Moldova is mostly Romanian-speaking and coexists with a large Russian-speaking community. Power alternates between pro-Russian and pro-Western, fueling recurring political crises.
Following piles of scandals around his face and given widespread corruption and endemic poverty, pro-European Maya Santou won the 2020 and 2021 presidential and parliamentary elections, consolidating her leadership position.
From Russian invasion of Ukraine, Chisinau expresses strong support for Kyiv. Welcomes refugees from Ukraine, has applied for membership of the European Union and has been promise of a significant increase in EU military assistance.
Because Moldova, belongs to the Transnistrian region, pro-Russian territory that has declared “independence” and borders Ukraine, fears that it will become the next target of Moscow, after the series of “attacks” that took place in April on its territory. The pro-Russian Transnistrian authorities then complained that the attacks “came from Ukrainian territory”.
Moscow does not miss an opportunity to sharply criticize Moldova.
