China: Uighurs in ‘detention centers’ reveal document leaks – Bat uniformed and skeletal people

by

A leak of files allegedly belonging to the Chinese police, including thousands of photos – between women, minors and the elderly sheds light on the situation of Uighur Muslims in Xinjiang.

He published these documents today a team of 14 international mediaincluding the French newspaper Le Monde, as the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet, embarks on a long-awaited visit to this vast region of northwest China.

They were handed over by an anonymous source to German researcher Adrian Chench, the first to accuse the Chinese regime in 2018 of confining at least one million Uighurs to political reform centers.

Beijing has always denied the figure, calling it a “lie of the century” and saying it was in fact a “vocational training center” aimed at denationalizing people who were motivated by Islam or separatist ideas.

But the documents published today prove that the presence of “trainees” in these centers there is nothing voluntary. “They are dismantling the glaze of Chinese propaganda,” Chench told the BBC.

The records include at least 2,800 ID photos of detainees, including Zeytunigul Ablejet, a 17-year-old teenager arrested for listening to a banned speech, and Bilal Qasim, 16, who was convicted of having sex with other detainees.

A skeletal woman named Anihan Hamit, who was 73 years old when she was arrested, is the oldest on the list.

Another image shows guards holding bats while subduing a chained prisoner.

The documents attest to the idea of a crackdown ordered by the top of the Chinese state.

Speech attributed to Police Minister Xiao Kezi in 2018 states that President Xi Jinping ordered the expansion of these detention centers. According to Xiao, at least two million people in southern Xinjiang were “severely affected by the intrusion of extremist thought.”

Uighurs make up almost the majority of Xinjiang’s population (26 million).

In a speech in 2017, Chen Guangguo, then head of the region, ordered the guards to shoot and kill those trying to escape and “closely monitor the faithful.”

Beijing has categorically denied the conclusions of Adrian Chench.

“It is” the last example to date of Xinjiang being defamed by anti-Chinese forces, “said Wang Wenbin, a spokesman for the Chinese Foreign Ministry.
